Evil Toys: The Duck That Had it in for my Kids

Do you have any evil toys at your house? The kind that seem to have it in for your kids?

We do...or we did until this morning. Ours was this Duck from the play mat.

It all began three years and two months ago......

Emily was one month old and we decided to try out the lovely new play mat her Great Grandmother had given to her. We opened it up and placed her on the mat and put up the arches. Within minutes of setting up the pay mat the duck dropped itself from one of the arches straight onto her tiny head. The poor possum screamed in pain as the duck is made from solid plastic and was quite heavy for a toy. Feeling like terrible parents, we quickly packed away the play mat for another day.

The evil duck struck again few weeks later when we again got the play mat out for her to play on. She was quietly enjoying looking at the toys while I was at the kitchen sink washing up. Suddenly I heard a gagging noise and looked to see her under the duck with the ribbons which hung about 4cm from the bottom (not pictured as we cut them off) , in her mouth and choking her. I quickly moved her away but not before she vomited everywhere.

We cut off the ribbons as they were obviously dangerous and continued using the mat with careful supervision of the duck. The duck was not deterred though, on one car trip we made (where we foolishly hung the duck over the capsule for her to play with) it used the cut ribbon to wrap a fraying thread around one of her tiny fingers. I think at that stage we decided to put the duck away.

Until today the duck as been laying low. I am sure he did take a shot at Claire but she is pretty tough so it was not that memorable. However, it appears that they may have made a deal, as this morning Claire was playing with Alicia on the mat and suddenly there was a screaming baby...and a toddler holding..the duck! Claire had managed to "accidentally" whack her in the head with the duck.

My protective mother instincts came out and I picked up the duck and tossed it out the door. We later  decided the duck had struck too many times so we gave him a new home where our children will be safe.....

THE BIN!
