Don't Hate Me Because I am Looking Forward to Big Brother

I am not afraid to admit that one of my favourite shows on TV was Big Brother. When I heard recently that it was coming back this year I was very excited but I was also a little concerned about the comments I was going to get from people when they find out I am watching it.

For some reason people feel that it is ok to make judgement about the character of a person based on the TV shows they watch. Just because I am a Christian (and a minister's wife) doesn't mean all I should be watching is the ABC or SBS (SBS is sometimes worse actually).  I know when I have admitted to watching Big Brother in the past I have had comments such as "oh, please don't tell me you watch THAT!" and my personal favourite "You are a bit of a voyeur" (quite an interesting comment when you look up the definition of the word...ewww not into that at all)

voyeurism

vo·yeur·ism

[vwah-yur-iz-uhm, voi-, voi-uh-riz-]
noun
the practice of obtaining sexual gratification by looking at sexual objects or acts, especially secretively.

I love the show, mostly because I love watching people and trying to understand them (probably why I have a psych degree). I will sit in a cafe and look at the people around me, wondering what their stories are, and what makes them tick. So BB is perfect for me as it give me the opportunity to see how different personalities interact with each other, to watch friendships form and best of all to see romance blossom.

I know lots of people say BB is all fake and it is in the editing but I don't really agree (mainly because someone I was very close with as a teenager was on BB and she was exactly the same as I remember her), it would be impossible to maintain a fake personality for three months. I also think that there is really no difference between a show like BB and any other show on TV. Whether it is reality or a made up storyline we are all still taking a look into the lives of others.

I understand that lots of people don't like the show, but I just wish people would not judge others character based on the shows they like to watch.   Yes TV is probably turning our brains to mush but after the kids are in bed it is a nice way to switch off no matter what we choose to watch.

I am looking forward to see what the return of BB brings, especially as it is now on Channel 9. Who knows I might hate it when it comes back but at this stage I will be watching.

Have you ever been judged by others for the shows you watch on TV?
