The Importance of Family Holidays

With spring finally showing herself to Canberra it is putting me in the mood for one thing....... a holiday. I am not sure what it is, maybe the warm sun on my shoulders that reminds me of summer or the sounds of children playing in the neighbourhood, but I am feeling in the holiday spirit. It hasn't helped that a few of my friends have headed off during the school holidays and have been posting pics on facebook that make me super jealous.

One of the things our family values is a good holiday. We love packing up the car and setting off to explore a new part of the country, or just returning to one of our favourite destinations. It doesn't really matter where we go, sometimes even the drive provides a great opportunity to just sit and talk. I have always said that I have the best conversations with my husband when he is in motion (walking or driving). Now that we have children, the car provides a bit of separation from them allowing (most of the time) us to actually hold a conversation.

 At our favourite holiday destination...Woolgoolga.

For both my husband and I, family holidays hold really special childhood memories. We both grew up in families who would set off on quite long drives and camp in a tent for a week or so. We loved it and decided early on that we wanted our children to grow up with similar experiences.

Despite holidaying being a big thing for our family we haven't had one all year and we are really feeling it. We have been tired and a bit grumpy with each other and we really just want to get away and relax together. We have a great marriage, but we really find that with the busyness of life we need a holiday away from it all to help grow our marriage. I always come back from a holiday feeling our marriage is stronger and our friendship is much deeper. I just love being away with him.

A holiday in Victoria last year.

The good thing is we don't have to wait too much longer. We do have a week booked in for the end of this month and we are going to take our little family away. I can't wait. I don't even care if the weather is good or bad, or if the accommodation is lovely or rundown. I just want to be with my family without the distractions of housework and routine.

I want to start creating wonderful experiences and memories for our girls, and give them memories that they will cherish as they grow into women and share with families of their own. I also want them to see their parents making time for each other and loving spending time together and enjoying being married. These are the things that are important to me.
