Trying to keep up to date with baby books

Tonight I decided to spend some time updating my girl’s baby books, and realised how far behind I am. The books sit in an obvious spot in my house as a constant reminder that I need to work on them, but despite this system I am so slack at updating them. It is not that I don’t enjoy doing it, I just don’t seem to make the time to do it regularly. The good thing is I think Emily’s is finished although it was a major effort to complete.

I was given her baby book at my baby shower by a friend (she may recognise it when she sees it). It is a Very Hungry Caterpillar themed book and is lovely, but this book is unbelievably detailed. Over the past two and a half years I have added what seems like every detail of her life. There are exact dates on when each tooth emerged, and dates for each milestone. Birthplaces of each of her parents and grandparents are recorded as well as space for family holidays, her likes/dislikes and so much more. I am sure in the future we will appreciate all this detail but for a mum not really very good at updating baby books it was hard work.

I  chose Claire’s book myself (with my laziness in mind) and while it still has enough space to record all the important things it is a bit less structured allowing me to decide what I include. I did, however, still find myself filling in the nine month section tonight, looking blankly at my husband asking “What was Claire doing at nine months?”

I know there are lots of mums out there who are great at keeping track of these things but I will freely admit that I am not one of them. It comforts me that I don’t even know if I have a baby book, and I don’t feel let down that I don’t know when I got my first tooth, so hopefully my kids will forgive me if I leave out some details of their lives.

  1. I write down dates on what has happened on pieces of paper, so I can write it down in the baby book later...then I lose the piece of paper! I'm trying to write it down directly into the baby book now lol I'm hopeless!

  4. I had an exercise book to note special events down, and would fill in the books later. Eventually, I began writing down quotes that the kids would say and wrote them into a book to give each of them at (probably) their 21st birthdays. On days where I couldn't find the exercise book, I made sure to write quotes in my diary.

  5. Julie - I do like the idea of a quotes book. I have planned on starting that....sometime.
