What Could You Give Up to Feed Hungry Families?

Last year I decided to give up buying chocolate and chips for a year so I could give the money to World Vision as part of the 40 hour famine. Amazingly, I was able to go the WHOLE year without purchasing chocolate to eat. A few of my lovely friends kept me supplied, but even when chocolate was very scarce I did not allow myself to buy it. I had calculated that the money I would have spent was approximately $2 per week so World Vision your cheque for $104 is on its way.

This year,  I wanted to do something bigger and better. While I am planning to continue not to buy chocolate and chips (mainly because it is a habit that is actually good for my health) I have been wracking my brain for what I could give up that would hurt a bit more. I know that my sacrifices can never be equal to what those who are starving go through, but I wanted to find a way I can give more.

I thought about giving up another type of food or drink but I don't really buy a lot of take away or coffees. I thought about the money I spend on buying clothes but I really don't waste a lot of  money on clothes, or buy clothes that are particularly expensive.

Then it hit me.......there is something that I regularly waste a lot of money on, something that I am slightly addicted to, and something that I really CAN live with out. It is make up.

The natural look actually takes lots of make up

I LOVE make up. I watch make up tutorials, I read beauty blogs, and I regularly buy make up. An eyeliner here, some false eyelashes there, a couple of make up brushes and a bag full Napoleon Perdis goodies. I would hate to think how much I spent in the last 12 months.

So this year (oh it hurts to say this) I am committing to stop buying make up. I will still wear it as I have enough to last the year and I will replace my mascara when it runs out, but there will be no more wasteful purchases. There will be no more buying make up from today for the next 12 months.

I'm sure that I have spent more than this in the past 12 months, but I will commit to giving $200 to World Vision in place of my spending on make up.

It won't solve the world's problems but it will make a difference to a few needy families.

Will you join me in giving something up?

Feel like the problem is too big? Do something small.

Good on you, what a great idea! Makeup really is not essential and we often over buy then throw stuff out! What a fantastic challenge.

I'm kind of excited about it but I know in a few weeks I will be longingly looking at the make -up counters at department stores :)
I think that is awesome you didn't buy choc or chips for a whole year! I just love the occasional chip or 20 as a treat at night time. Makeup is a good choice I think, it is easy to get caught up buying things you will use once, if at all. #teamIBOT

I still can't believe I did it for a year. My head just says "I don't buy chocolate" whenever I am tempted. I even say it aloud to the kids at the shops "We don't buy chocolate, it is a present or a treat" Daddy does still buy it when we have people over but I never do now.
A great sacrifice and judging by your profile pic, you don't even need to wear it anyway! Perhaps I could quit Pop Tarts and donate the excessive amount of $ I am wasting on those to a good cause such as yourself.

Aww thanks. I actually think that sometimes we all look better with no make up on. Haha Pop Tarts...we all have our vices ;)
Now you're making me think! I really don't buy chocolate that much, I don't wear much makeup...but what I would give up is my icecream! Another thing I would really like to do is instead of my husband and I exchanging christmas presents, I'd love to donate the money to a cause. I did this with my sons 1st birthday, asked people to donate to the Starlight Childrens Foundation because my son just had so many things already. I completely understood that people would still like to give gifts but it was great to be able to donate the $70. Good work for going without buying chocolate and chips!

Ohh ice cream would be hard to give up. I really like the idea of donating instead of buying gifts. We sometimes have bought Goats and Toilets (for overseas families) and given the card that states where it went for Christmas. People like it but I think they still like to get another gift as well.
I wish I could give up coffee and alcohol that would be a big effort! Not much of a makeup girl since having children, but I should, it might make me look YEARS younger! x

I don't drink coffee but I know lots of people who have given up their store bought coffee and saved (or donated) lots of money. Giving up something has to be right for you though. These things I am giving up are things that I know I don't need, or should not really be wasting money on. It has a double benefit (for me and the charity).
That's a huge commitment Lisa but good on you!
There are things I could give up, but it hurts to think about it!

It is a big commitment but when I think that people are starving and I am spending equivalent to a weeks worth of food (for a family) on something so unnecessary, it makes it so much easier.
I can only imagine how big a commitment that would actually be. I'm not sure what I could give up, maybe alcohol would be a wise one. But will try and think of something that's a little less fun but just as much of a necessity.

I have been drinking a lot of wine lately (2-3 glasses a week which is a lot for me) maybe I will need to give that up next year. Or not :)
I think what you are doing is awesome!! Me and my husband run a missions organization that educates children and I am so sure that we can see change happen across the world in our lifetime if people in developed countries were just willing to give up one thing to help people in developing countries. I think you are inspirational!

Thank you Alana. I wish I could give up more but this at least is a start. It has been hard already but I am glad to be doing it. If you are interested in sharing about your organisation on the blog let me know.
Here the most of information that I think it will help. I spent so much of time with your post. It is really nice. This is one of the good examples for makeup lovers. Thanks you.
