Home made Ricotta cheese!!!

In my last post I spoke about my purchase of a cheese making kit. It makes Ricotta and Mozzarella in 30 mins. I tried it last night and thought I would share it with you. You can see from the pictures I made it all the time it took to cook dinner (a tomato risotto).

All I had to do was buy 4L of milk then add the citric acid and cheese salt (I got in my kit) then heat the milk up to 90 degrees (themometer provided in kits also)

Once the milk reaches the correct temperature the curds and whey separate and the cooking part of the cheese making is done.

The curds starting to separate
I then spooned the curds into the cloth (also in kit) and let it drain. Then I hung it up for 30 mins and my cheese was ready!

The cheese will last in the fridge for a week or it can be frozen. I am pretty excited about this as I love ricotta but I do wonder sometimes what happens to it when it sit in the supermarkets/delis. This way I know exactly where it has come from. I purchased the kit from Green Living Australia  http://www.greenlivingaustralia.com.au.

The finished product!
Sorry if I have tempted you to buy it.......I feel a little bit bad about sharing it after the last post.

  1. ha ha - I was going to ask about your cheese making kit (have been eyeing off one myself), but thought better considering your post - incidentally I do the same thing (ie putting off buying something, and expecting it to solve all my problems)

  3. Kate - Glad to know I am not the only one who feels that way. I guess it is our human nature and advertising which causes us to be this way. The cheese making was fun. It will take a little while to be cheaper than buying but at least the cheese is safer to eat when made fresh. It made a good ricotta cheesecake.

  4. Would you mind sharing where you bought the kit and what it has? I wanted to try my hand at making my own cheese as well but have no idea where to get the rennet or curdling ingredient.
