I Lived in Sin for Six Weeks

Today is my 8th wedding anniversary. It seems like only yesterday that I walked down the aisle of our church and married the man that I love. I was going to get all soppy and tell you how much I love my hubby but I thought it would be more interesting to share a funny story from when we were married.

Our wedding day was much like any other wedding. We exchanged vows, exchanged rings and signed a couple of pieces of paper. We left the church, enjoyed our fabulous wedding reception and went off on our honeymoon in the Maldives.

Little did we know....we were actually not married at all.

After returning from our honeymoon, we started our married life (or so we thought). It soon came time to pick up or marriage certificate so we could go about changing names. We contacted Births, Death and Marriages only to be told there was no record of our marriage. This seemed odd as were were pretty sure we got married. A few phone calls to the minister who married us revealed there really was no marriage certificate. Somehow on the day, we signed the church book, our copy of the certificate but we didn't actually sign the legal documents. We were not legally married!!!

The happy unmarried couple

We quickly gathered some witnesses and headed to the home office of our minister. We entered the dark and dingy room and huddled around the paperwork, quickly signing our names in the hope that we could be married and no one would ever know our dark secret. Ok that was just be being dramatic (although in my memory it did seem a little dodgy). It was only six weeks late and with different witnesses from the ones you will see in the photos but at least we were finally legally married.

Of course, despite not being married in the eyes of the law, we knew we were always married in the eyes of God. I joke about us living in sin (only because I think it is funny) but we were never actually concerned about it. Our wedding day was pretty perfect to us. This story only makes it more fun.

We look so young!
My hubby is now responsible for marrying people at our church. Now he is very careful to make sure married couples sign ALL the paperwork.

Do you have a funny wedding story to share?

too funny...
My Church spelt my name wrong! Funnily enough they got the surname right (Chrzescijanski) yet spelt Yasmin with a J so we also had to resign everything!

Our wedding had a gate crasher!
It was a girl who really liked our best man. It wasn't a sit down reception, though it was on the formal end of a mingling reception. We had worked really hard to keep the guest list to 200. (Big extended family- my mum is one of 6 kids) She brought a present. And she's front and centre of most of our wedding photos at the church and reception! I can laugh about it, and no, they never did get together... :)

Haha a great post and a great tale to share. My husband and I have been married for 8 years so we were married in the same year.

Love this story! How great. Good thing that the eyes of God are greater than the eyes of the law :)
I had a major operation 7 weeks before our wedding, so I did well to even walk down the aisle - but it was the most wonderful day.

That is pretty funny...but the main thing is you had a great day and looked gorgeous! Oh and the fact that you rectified the problem quickly is pretty important!

Fabulous! Our priest made sure we signed the legal paperwork a month before the wedding day itself! So it felt very odd indeed being legally married, but still no ceremony or Church!

Ha ha, that is a tad funny. Your wedding day is always so busy I'm not surprised something was missed!!

At a wedding recently the pastor and his father in law were discussing the logistics of passing on the marriage certificate ASAP so that it would all be legal. Now I see why!
Pretty funny story and happy Anniversary! It's 8 years for us next month :)

That is amusing, considering your hubby is a minister. Our wedding went by without much of an incident, I was just happy everything went to plan :)

oh dear - The Pastor G who had 'married us' was not the official Pastor M who signed the paperwork (he was present though seated with guests ). Pastor G at time couldn't officiate but 'performed' the ceremony.
11 months after we got married our friends did.
Pastor G said Hey guys bad news you're not married - and I felt ill -because I always had my doubts ...lucky he told me he was joking .
